Some thoughts with the group

Today we had a group session with Karin which was great. She showed us her AAA exhibition with Sean Ryder and talked us through her planning and budget for the exhibition and just generally how she went about it.

It was a really informative session and we took a lot away from it as a group. The sheer amount of planning was underestimated alongside the budget and costs of printing!

We were given a rough set of questions to get us thinking about our festivals and this has formed a foundation for discussion and research within the group. We used this as more of an excercise rather than an actual plan of action but it was a great way to get started with the group and got us talking about our plans.

Questions:
How many images?
What size images?
What materials?
Budget?
Use of video projection?
Images for sale?
Publicity?
How long to produce the exhibition?

Answers:
1. 30 of our images & 30 of our practitioners images ( 6 images for each artist )

2. A2/A3

3. All images will be mounted and framed - White walls, black frames, white mount board.

5. N/A

6. £1200 for small frames, 150 prints at £4 each. We will sell them at £20 each which will sum to £3,000 and we'll make a profit of £1,800

7. Website, leaflets, magazine publication, local promotion as well as international, sponsorships, press release, social network ... Could play on the use of Capital Culture.

8. 1 Year to produce -
Basic Break down of the year :

Start promoting straight away
Organise printing
Organise framing
Decide on the layout
Lighting

We were presented with these after seeing Karins AAA exhibition which was really informative. I loved the work on display and it was nice to hear about the planning of the exhibition from her point of view and get her honest opinions on things. After running through the reasons behind it, general organising etc we got onto cost and the time and effort that went into selecting print methods and companies.

Overall it was a great eye opener for the behind the scenes running and cost of a one person exhibition. Now we just have to apply all the above to our 10 person festival!
